Little Rock 2010

At all Peabody Hotels there is a tradition of the "Duck March". One drake and four hens reside in the Duck Palace, a room fixed up for the ducks to stay whenever they are not in the pool in the lobby swimming and feeding and preening for the public. At 11:00 AM every morning the ducks are marched from their suite on the second floor to their daytime residence at the pool by a "Duck Master". He is decked out in red coat and tails and offers up the history of the ducks before leading them on their march to and from their daytime and nightime habitats. My friend Bob asked them if they served duck at the hotel. Wow! The last image is not a dupplicate, it is a link to a video of the Duck March.

There is a little "dive" of a diner in Little Rock that we were told has the best steak in town. It is called Doe's Eat Place and was the hangout of then presidential hopeful Bill Clinton and his staff while running his first campaign. The area of town was seedy but the food was excellent. Little Rock is the capital of Arkansas and sits on the Arkansas River.

Little Rock is the capital of Arkansas and sits on the Arkansas River. But they do have a suchi bar in town. :<) I was in Little Rock for a URISA conference. It is a joint meeting of GIS professionals and Assessment professionals where emerging technologies in local Appraisal offices are changing the way property is valued. :<)

The conference scheduled a dinner event at the Clinton Presidential Library, a nice way to get some food and take a look around at how a Presidential Library is setup. Interesting tour even though I was never a Bill Clinton fan. Just after we finished eating, the tornado sirens sounded and we were all ushered into the basement until the all clear was sounded. The Library is made up of lots of glass exterior so the basement was probably the best idea. And just how many people can say they've seen the basement in a Presidential Library?

There were recreations of the Cabinet Room and the Oval Office. There was a year by year breakdown of events and accomplishments, of course, all portrayed from the Clinton point of view.

And apparently Madeleine Albright has loaned her quite extensive pin collection to the Library for temporary display.

The staff at the Library were very nice and helpful, allowing me three passes to get through the metal detector. While the tornadoes didn't hit the downtown area, there were 5 or 6 of them around the metropolitan area and at least one person was killed.
